Number of electric cars will increase 10-fold by 2030; 6 out of 10 vehicles sold will be electric

According to the International Energy Agency report, the number of electric cars in the world will increase 10-fold by the end of 2030. By 2030, more than 60 percent of the vehicles sold in the world will be electric.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) report, the proportion of renewable energy sources will increase rapidly. The report points out that the number and prevalence of electric vehicles will also increase significantly by the end of 2030.

Accordingly, the number of electric cars in the world will increase 10 times by the end of 2030. By 2030, more than 60 percent of the vehicles sold in the world will be electric. Electric car sales in Turkey also gained momentum in 2023.

The IEA’s World Energy Outlook (WEO) report is seen as the most authoritative source for analysis and projections for the energy sector in the world. The 2023 report includes analysis and forecasts showing how widespread electric vehicles will become in a short period. According to IEA data, the number of electric vehicles has increased rapidly in recent years. Electric car sales exceeded 10 million in 2022, reaching 10.3 million. In 2021, 6.5 million cars were sold in the world. According to the IEA’s analysis, the number of electric cars sold in 2023 will reach 13.9 million. In 2020, the number of sales remained at 3 million. Such annual sales have increased 363 percent in the last three years. In 2024, this momentum is expected to continue rising

What will happen by 2030?

According to the World Energy Outlook, based on current government policies, support for clean energy technologies will increase. Global demand for coal, oil, and gas will peak before 2030. For the first time in a WEO report, fossil fuel demand is projected to peak in a scenario based on current policies.

The share of fossil fuels in the global energy supply, which has remained at 80 percent for decades, will fall to 73 percent by 2030.

Extraordinary growth in clean energy

Clean energy technologies will play a much bigger role in the world energy system by 2030 than today. The number of electric vehicles on the road will increase 10-fold, while the share of renewable energy in global electricity generation will approach 50 percent, up from 30 percent today.

New offshore wind projects will see three times as much investment as new coal and gas plants.

According to the IEA report, renewables will provide 80 percent of new electricity generation capacity by 2030. Solar energy alone will account for half of this growth.

One out of every 5 vehicles sold in the world will be electric in 2023

According to the IEA’s Global Electric Vehicle Outlook report, the share of electric vehicles in total vehicle sales reached 14 percent in 2022. This rate was 4 percent in 2020 and 9 percent in 2021.

The number of electric vehicle sales is expected to reach the 14 million mark worldwide this year, and thus one in every 5 vehicles sold is expected to be electric.

6 out of 10 cars sold in 2030 will be electric

According to the IEA report, the share of electric cars among the cars sold in the world in 2030 will exceed 60 percent. In 2030, the stock of electric cars in the world will be around 350 million.
