Similar to the electric transformation in automobiles is also happening in commercial vehicles. Sales of electric trucks and buses are increasing rapidly in Europe.

A great transformation is taking place in the automobile world. Diesel and gasoline cars are being replaced by hybrid and electric cars. Especially the sales of electric cars are increasing rapidly. Their share of the market is growing.

However, this transformation is not limited to automobiles. Light commercial vehicles, trucks, and buses are also undergoing an electric transformation. According to ACEA data, the share of electric vans in the European market rose to 7.3 percent in the first three months of 2023. Sales doubled with an increase of 91.4 percent. Of course, diesel-powered vehicles remain the most preferred fuel with 83 percent. In 2022, the share of diesel was 83 percent.

Market share is rising

It is a similar situation in trucks. Diesel still represents 95.5 percent of the market. But electric trucks are growing in popularity. Sales of new electric trucks increased by 321.7 percent to 3,918 units. The market share of electric trucks rose to 1.5 percent. In 2022, it was 0.4 percent. In the first three quarters of 2023, electric bus sales increased by 31.5 percent to 3,405 units. The market share increased from 13 percent to 14.4 percent.

Turkey is the center of electric commercials

Turkey is an important producer of electric buses. Electric buses produced by Bozankaya, Temsa, Karsan, Otokar, BMC, and Anadolu Isuzu are exported to many countries around the world. Turkey is also on its way to becoming a base for the production of electric light commercial vehicles. Ford Otosan started producing the electric E-Transit Custom at its Kocaeli plant. The new E-Transit Custom, the fully electric version of Europe’s best-selling commercial vehicle, is of strategic importance in Ford’s electric transformation.

Design award for Turkish-made electric bus

Anadolu Isuzu received the “German Design Award Winner” award in the Passenger Vehicles category at the German Design Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious design awards, for its all-electric CitiVolt model. CitiVolt had previously won the Excellence award in the “Safe Bus” category at the Busworld Vehicle Awards 2023.
